High-Efficiency Gas Furnaces

Today most popular choice for home heating is the high-efficiency forced-air gas furnace. The furnace is the hardest working appliance in your house especially during the cold Canadian winters it works 24/7 to keep your house warm.

  • Econ’s furnaces are 96%+ high-efficient furnace compared with older furnaces that are around 60% efficient.
  • AFUE ratings 90-98%+ Indicate a High- Efficiency Gas Furnace.
  • AEUF rating below 80% indicate an older, relatively inefficient furnace that costs more to run and also generates more pollution.

Why Upgrade your furnace?

If your house is over 15-years old, your furnace is likely only a mid-efficient model and in need of replacement.

A mid-efficient furnace means you are likely paying 40-50% more for your energy bills because mid-efficient furnaces operate at about 50-65% efficient. The Government rebates are around to help.

An Air Conditioner has three parts to it, the compressor, the condenser, and the evaporator connected to your furnace.

The SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) is a seasonal measure for an Air conditioner. The higher the SEER the more savings you receive, unlike the old models with 8 SEER or less, the new models have a SEER rating of 14.5 which allows you to use less Energy. The old model Air conditioner R-22 often referred to as Freon.

  • R-22 is a hydro-chlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) which contributes to ozone depletion.
  • As of 2010, R-22 was discontinued for use in new air conditioning systems.
  • The new model Air conditioner R-410A REFRIGERANT often referred to as Puron.

  • Has been approved for use in new residential air conditioners.
  • Is a hydro-fluorocarbon (HFC) which does not contribute to ozone depletion.
  • Is the new standard residential air conditioning systems since 2015.

Power-vented water heaters work the same as ordinary water heaters, however the exhaust gases are blown out with a small fan instead of rising upwards through metal pipes. Power vented water heaters are one of the most common gas water heater used in newer houses, it is a storage tank type water heater consist of a gas burner and a steel cylinder with GREEN FOAM insulation to store hot water. A white colored 636 PVC piping is by-law required in Canada due to safety concerns. A power vent water heater does not need a chimney but uses an electrically powered fan to move combustion products outside. This requires an electrical outlet near the tank.

Hot Water Tank Heating Systems Overview

  • Water heating accounts for 15-25% of the average homeowner’s energy bill.
  • A hot-water tank takes water from your municipal water source and heats it up using electric, gas, or oil fuel sources.
  • When the hot water tap is turned-on, water is drawn from the tank and new water is added and a thermostat ensures the water stays at ~140 degrees Celsius.

This style of venting is used when:

  • Replacing an electric water heater and you do not have ready access to a chimney.
  • You have access to a dedicated electrical receptacle within six feet of the unit.

Tankless Water Heater (also called On-Demand Water Heater). A tankless water heater has no tank and stores no hot water. When hot water is needed, the water is heated on demand. (And uses less energy) When the hot water tap is turned on it triggers a flow switch that activates the burner which heats the cold water entering the tankless water heater. The water is rapidly heated to the desired temperature. This continues for as long as the hot water tap remains in the ‘on’ position.

When installed in your house, and when the tap is turned ‘off’ the system shuts down resulting in substantial energy savings over units that have hot water stored in the tank on ‘stand-by’. A conventional water tank does not require an electrical outlet near the water tank for installation. And it does not require electricity. If there is a power outage you will still have hot water. A tankless water heater can save space and offer flexibility being able to be installed close to the point of use, and saves more energy than a storage tank water heater.

Sub-metering uses meters to measure the consumption in each individual unit, as opposed to a bulk meter for the whole building s opposed to a bulk meter for the whole building.
